The Signals Your Body Has Been Sending Me

For years, I thought pushing through was one of my greatest strengths.

As a corporate litigator, there were always clients to serve, deadlines to meet, and another problem waiting to be solved. If I was exhausted, stressed, or running on too little sleep, I didn’t slow down. I simply worked harder.

Looking back, my body was trying to tell me something.

I just wasn’t listening.

The afternoon energy crashes.

The tension headaches.

The restless sleep.

The constant feeling that I was running on empty.

I assumed those things were simply part of having a demanding career. I ignored them because I thought successful people pushed through discomfort.

Today, many of my clients tell me the same thing.

“I thought feeling exhausted was just part of getting older.”

“I figured everyone hurt all the time.”

“I assumed my metabolism had simply stopped working.”

Most of us become so accustomed to ignoring our body’s signals that we stop recognizing them as signals at all.

Your Body Is Always Communicating

Our bodies are constantly giving us feedback.

Persistent fatigue may be telling us we aren’t recovering well.

Afternoon cravings might be a sign that our meals aren’t providing enough protein or that our blood sugar is on a roller coaster.

Poor sleep can be a signal that stress has become chronic.

Loss of strength may indicate we’re not doing enough resistance training to preserve muscle as we age.

These aren’t character flaws.

They’re information.

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that healthy people never experience these challenges. The truth is, everyone receives signals from their body. The difference is that some people pay attention to them sooner than others.

Ignoring the signals doesn’t make them disappear.

It simply delays the opportunity to address them.

Why Busy Professionals Miss the Signs

Many of my clients are accomplished professionals who spent decades putting everyone else first.

They built careers.

Raised families.

Cared for aging parents.

Met deadlines.

Solved problems.

Somewhere along the way, they became experts at ignoring their own needs.

By the time they finally slow down, they’re often frustrated by weight gain, declining energy, chronic stress, or a metabolism that doesn’t seem to respond the way it once did.

It’s easy to assume these changes happened overnight.

They usually didn’t.

Our bodies often whisper long before they shout.

What This Means for Your Metabolic Health

One of the goals of metabolic health is learning to work with your body instead of constantly fighting it.

When you’re chronically stressed, sleeping poorly, losing muscle, or eating in ways that leave you hungry all day, your body responds.

Energy declines.

Cravings increase.

Recovery takes longer.

Maintaining a healthy weight becomes more difficult.

These aren’t signs that you’ve failed.

They’re signs that your body needs something different than it did twenty or thirty years ago.

Healthy aging isn’t about perfection.

It’s about becoming more aware of the messages your body has been sending all along.

Start Getting Curious

Instead of criticizing your body, try becoming curious about it.

Ask yourself:

Why am I so tired every afternoon?

Why am I always hungry after dinner?

Why do I wake up feeling exhausted?

Why do I feel stronger on some days than others?

Those questions often lead to better answers than simply blaming yourself or assuming it’s “just aging.”

Small changes—improving sleep, adding strength training, eating enough protein, managing stress, or simply slowing down long enough to notice how you feel—can have a surprisingly powerful impact over time.

The Bottom Line

For years, I thought ignoring my body’s signals was a sign of determination.

Now I see it differently.

Our bodies are incredibly intelligent. They’re constantly giving us information about what they need to stay healthy.

The sooner we learn to listen, the sooner we can make choices that support our metabolism, our energy, and our long-term health.

Your body isn’t working against you.

It’s been trying to help you all along.
