Researchers published a four-month study in Frontiers in Nutrition. They switched overweight adults to a low-fat vegan diet plan for weight loss. This change reduced the body’s overall acidity—a factor linked to shedding pounds.
The Link Between Diet and Inflammation
Hana Kahleova, a co-author, explained, “Eating acid-producing foods like meat, eggs, and dairy increases dietary acid load, which causes inflammation and promotes weight gain.” She added, “Replacing animal products with plant-based foods such as leafy greens, berries, and legumes helps people lose weight and supports a healthy gut microbiome.”
How the Study Was Conducted?
The study assigned 62 overweight adults to follow either a Mediterranean or a low-fat vegan diet for 16 weeks. A four-week cleansing period separated the two diets, after which participants switched to the alternate plan. Researchers tracked dietary records to calculate acid load—the net acid production from consumed foods.

Meat, fish, eggs, and cheese increase the body’s acid production. This acid production links to chronic inflammation, which drives weight gain and other health issues.
