I practiced law for 23 years, so I know that legal practice is one of the most stressful careers on the planet. Therefore, practicing stress management is crucial. Who hasn’t awakened in the middle of the night thinking “Did I miss a filing deadline?” We work very long hours. Many of us end up neglecting our health as a result. Who has time to go to the gym or prepare healthy meals?

But, with just a little effort and planning you can get back on the road to good health habits and feeling better about yourself. Here are some quick tips to help get you there:

1.     Plan for Healthy Eating

All it takes to eat healthier during your non-stop workday is a little planning. Bring some healthy snacks to the office. Here are some good options:

  • Packaged, pre-sliced apples
  • Precooked and peeled hard boiled eggs (Costco)
  • Sting cheese
  • Cut up your favorite fruits and package in snack bag portions
  • Greek yogurt

2.      Ten Minutes of Exercise

Recommended exercise is 30 minutes 5 times a week. But, you don’t have to do it all at once. Here’s how to squeeze in 10 minutes:

  • Walk up and down the stairs in your building
  • Choose a lunch venue that is some distance away from your office so you get a walk with your meal
  • Stand up and walk around in your office during long conference calls
  • Host a “walking meeting”
  • Buy a stand up desk

3.      De-Stress

Constant stress causes deleterious physiological changes. Don’t turn into an adrenaline junkie. Here are some ways to chill:

  • Take 5 minutes to center yourself and plan for the day before you leave the house
  • Put your exercise plans on your smartphone calendar and consider them doctor avoidance appointments
  • Take a minute out of your day to do or say something nice to a colleague or loved one
  • Keep a gratitude journal
